San Francisco’s Conspiracy of Beards is a 30-member male choir that performs gritty, heartfelt arrangements of the songs of the great Leonard Cohen. Formed in 2003 through the inspiration of the late performance artist Peter Kadyk, this a capella group has become an integral part of the SF folk scene and is well known for their live performances at Bay Area venues such as Cafe Du Nord, Great American Music Hall, SF City Hall and SF MOMA, as well as dozens of bars, bookstores, hospices and various other community centers. The choir has also been featured on several radio programs including NPR’s “West Coast Live,” and on PBS television. They made their East Coast debut in the spring of 2008 at New York’s Highline Ballroom, Bowery Poetry Club, and other venues. Winter 2010 will see The Beards venturing south for their first ever shows in the Los Angeles area.
Transforming Cohen’s simple melodies into complex 4- and 5-part harmonies, Conspiracy of Beards achieves a sound that is both robust and tender, with influences of jazz, gospel, indie rock, barbershop, classical and doo-wop through the unique arrangements choir members create. Using the genius of Cohen’s words, The Beards inspire audiences to ponder romance, politics, sex, longing and spirituality, all amid laughter and cheers.
